It can be very confusing to the amateur plumber with little experience when it comes to name, definition and the difference between things called a gully, a drain and an inspection chamber. Kensington Plumbers can work on these gullies and chambers. This would not really be an issue in the normal course of events, that is, however until you need to talk about a defect to someone else like a professional on the telephone or even face to face with a retailer, trying to buy materials. So knowing the difference can be quite important.

1). The Gully.

The gully takes the form of a grid in which is a trap filled with water, with a U-bend at the end of the drain system. It basically removes the waste water from the sink in the kitchen. It is also the thing that you see at the bottom end of rainwater pipe which keeps getting blocked with leaves. Gullies do require servicing, but it is the kitchen waste gully that you need to keep an eye on as it blocks with food etc. A Kensington Plumber can unblock this.

2). Inspection Chamber.

The waste water from the upstairs bath tub and bathroom wash basin runs into a funnel shaped hopper (on the outside wall near the bathroom window), down the waste pipe and into a grid. There it is joined by waste water from the kitchen sink, and moves on to an inspection chamber and then down the sewer. The toilet waste moves down its own dedicated stack/soil pipe straight into the inspection chamber, where it is washed away by the wastewater both the bathroom and kitchen. In newer homes, it is a single stack system. All waste runs down the same large diameter pipe.
